For the Houston Cinema Arts Festival 2020, Houston Cinema Arts Society features virtual and drive-in screenings of films in addition to live stream performances, interactive experiences, and Q&A and panels. This year, HCAF celebrates "Urbana," inspired by the globally popular Spanish-language genre música Urbana, which has its origin in African and the trans-Atlantic slave trade. As a part of the Urbana section for the Houston Cinema Arts Festival 2020 (Nov 12 - Nov 22), Shogun Assassin will be available at the Snowboat Drive-In Cinema at 7:30 PM on Nov 13. This legendary midnight movie sensation is a giddily entertaining, mesmerizingly gory classic of East-meets-West grindhouse mayhem based on a manga series by Kazuo Koke and Goseki Kojima. Firmly embedded in samurai mythology within American culture, this influence is visible in the dialogue and music excerpts from Shogun Assassin sampled in the GZA album “Liquid Swords” and in the famous scene from Kill Bill: Volume 2 when Beatrix Kiddo and her daughter watch this film together as a bedtime story. The film also gave the basis for the Star Wars series The Mandalorian.
